Sixty years ago, the Swiss philosopher and great pioneer of European integration, Denis de Rougemont, believed in a cultural Europe, a Europe in which people outside the nation state and culture were involved as an indispensable part of the reconstruction and rebuilding of Europe after the war Healing. Sixty years later, the importance of culture in the paradigm of our society’s well-being needs to be recognised even more than economic growth and further actively stimulated. To achieve a sustainable Europe, environmental, social and cultural goals need to be reconciled with financial and economic goals. The role of creative and critical thinking fostered by artistic and cultural activities also plays an important role if citizens are to regain confidence in Europe. The reason for the need for a place for European art and culture lies in this statement by Denis de Rougemont. Today’s “Erasmus generation” lives Europe and is its future. They come from Europe and abroad and are interested in developing alternative approaches and improving cultural research and awareness. The implementation of knowledge that leads to constant questioning and through knowledge and many connections are created nowadays through the internet. A real meeting place in the city of Venice offers everyone a unique meeting place in Europe to explore, experience, document and present cultural commonalities.
The European Cultural Centre (ECC) is a platform for the representation of interdisciplinary art forms, a place for reflection, research and creation, as well as for resources and experimentation. The ECC provides the conditions to invite artistic and creative practitioners from all fields – visual arts, dance, performance, theatre, music, literature, architecture, etc. – and to initiate a process of learning, exchange and shared experience. Here, the most important current problems are explored in order to shape a common future. The ECC is a place in constant movement, presenting not only completed projects but also projects that represent a strong interaction between the different creative practices, the city, the participants and visitors from all over the world.
