The Donaueschingen Regionale was founded in 2003 as the “Donaueschingen Regionale for New Art” and takes place every two years. The primary idea was to offer a representative overview of contemporary art in the region. The goal pursued was then and is now to provide a fixed space for the visual arts in Donaueschingen. Artists who live and work in the administrative districts of South Baden and South Württemberg, as well as in the districts of Baden-Baden, Rastatt, Karlsruhe, Freudenstadt, Calw, Pforzheim, Stuttgart and Esslingen are eligible to participate.https://www.donaueschingen.de/donaueschingerregionale
In the ninth edition of the art show in 2019, the geographical limitation once made for organizational reasons increasingly receded into the background – owed to increasing mobility. Artists who once moved away for study and work are returning, staying in touch with their homeland as part of their artistic activities and addressing site-specific themes in their work. This creates a new web of relationships in which tradition, the familiar and memory are mixed and overlaid with new experiences, insights and perspectives.
